How much should my pet eat?
A quick daily portion guide based on your pet’s weight, age and lifestyle.
- 0 gper meal
- 0kcal from food
- 0kcal for treats
Portions leave 10% of the day’s calories for treats; if you don’t give treats, add about 10% more food. This is an estimate to start from. Every pet is different, so check their body shape every couple of weeks and adjust by about 10%. Puppies, kittens, pregnant or nursing pets and pets with health conditions should have their portions set by your vet.

How the calculator works
Vets work out a pet's daily calories in two steps. First comes the resting energy requirement: 70 × body weight in kg to the power of 0.75. That figure is then multiplied by a factor for life stage and activity, for example 1.6 for a neutered adult dog or 1.2 for a neutered adult cat. The calculator divides the result by your food's calories to give grams per day.
Getting the most accurate portion
Use your food's real calories. Brands vary a lot, so choose "Enter calories from packet" and type in the kcal per 100 g printed on the bag or pouch.
Weigh, don't scoop. A cup or scoop can be 20% out either way. Kitchen scales, or a smart feeder that dispenses set portions, keep meals consistent.
Watch their shape. You should be able to feel your pet's ribs without pressing hard and see a waist from above. If they're gaining or losing weight you didn't intend, adjust the portion by about 10% and check again in two weeks.
