Lots of cats don’t drink much from a still bowl, and many owners find their cat drinks more from moving water. That’s the idea behind a cat water fountain: a small pump keeps water circulating through a filter, so it stays fresh and appealing. Here’s how to choose one, and how to keep it clean.
Do cats need a water fountain?
No cat needs one, but they can help. Cats evolved to get much of their water from food, so many have a low thirst drive. Moving water tends to catch their attention, and a filtered fountain stays fresher than a bowl left out all day. If your cat mostly eats dry food, or your vet has asked you to help them drink more, a fountain is an easy thing to try.
How much water should a cat drink?
A common rule of thumb is around 50ml per kg of body weight a day, including the water in wet food. A 4kg cat on dry food might need around 200ml from their bowl or fountain. Every cat is different, so if you notice your cat suddenly drinking much more or much less than usual, speak to your vet, as it can be a sign of a health problem.
What to look for
- Material. Stainless steel is easy to clean, doesn’t scratch and holds up well over time. Plastic fountains are lighter and cheaper, and they’re fine if you clean them regularly.
- Size. 1.5–2L suits one cat. For two or more cats, or if you’re out all day, go for 2.5–3L or more.
- Noise. Look for a quiet pump (around 30–35dB or less), especially if the fountain will sit in a bedroom.
- Filters. Replaceable filters catch hair and debris. Check that spare filters are easy to get.
- Power. Most fountains run on 5V USB, which is safe and lets you use any USB plug. If a fountain plugs into the mains, make sure it comes with a proper UK plug.
- Low-water protection. Some pumps switch off or show a light when the water runs low, which protects the pump.
How to clean a cat water fountain
- Top up the water every day or two.
- Once a week, take the fountain apart and wash the bowl and parts in warm, soapy water. Rinse well.
- Clean the pump every couple of weeks. Hair builds up around the impeller, and an old toothbrush is ideal for getting it out.
- Change the filter as the maker recommends, usually every 2–4 weeks.
